Earlier this year, the 74 primary schools in Motherwell Diocese were invited to take part in a competition to design a logo which pilgrims could use as their pilgrimage badge as they travelled along the Ladywell Way. The Ladywell Route begins in the Diocese of Motherwell so it was a great opportunity for the children to find out about the Way of St Andrews. Schools were provided with detailed lesson planning which allowed the children to learn more about what a pilgrimage is and in particular, to find out about the Way of St Andrews. The standard of artwork was outstanding and 5 worthy entries were chosen to be displayed on the St Andrews website. Each of these logos can be be downloaded for pilgrims to use as their badge as they travel the route. The 4 highly commended entries were:
Ciara McIntyre from St Cadoc’s Primary, Cambuslang
Jayden Cuthbert from Our Lady Of Good Aid Cathedral Primary, Motherwell
Skye Carlin from St Serf’s Primary, Airdrie
Leah Burns from St Elizabeth’s Primary, Hamilton
And the overall winner was
Emily Warwick from St Patrick’s Primary in New Stevenson.
The feedback from pupils and teachers who participated in the initiative was very positive. Many teachers said they found the lesson plans very clear and fitted well with the Outcomes and Experiences of Curriculum for Excellence. Some teachers also found this learning linked this learning to the children’s work with the Pope Francis Faith Award.
